Natural Surroundings

This general area has a high desert feel with much open sagebrush covered terrain. With the forest covering of other areas in the valley, this area gets good sun all year and great views of the hillsides to the east and open space by Shay Meadow and Baldwin Lake are available.

The open areas of the hillside, meadow, and lakebed (usually dry) provide great opportunities for viewing the abundant wildflowers of spring and early summer. It also gives great views for wildlife viewing to spot burros, coyotes, sometimes deer, smaller mammals and many birds. Hawks hunt in the area and smaller birds—finches, scrub jays, pine siskins, to name a few—scour the sage and other native plants for food.
