Natural Surroundings

The Pacific Crest Trail and the Sugarloaf Mountain trail run nearby and the National Forest on all sides gives plenty of access to forest hiking. Two large wilderness areas–Bighorn Wilderness and San Gorgonio Wilderness—are set on forest land a bit down the hill to the east and south. The high desert setting to the northeast provides great opportunity for wildflowers.

The area has beautiful views of the forested hillsides to the west and south and of the open landscape to the northeast. All types of wildlife from the nearby forest have been known to wander through, from the very occasional deer, black bear or mountain lion to the more common raccoons, squirrels, jack rabbits, and coyotes, as well as many small mountain birds and hunting hawks or owls. The snow that comes over Onyx Summit even usually melts fast with the good sunshine.
