  • Shoreline
  • East coast feel
  • Village

Area Overview

An extensive, winding shoreline with lakeside homes and private docks gives the lakefront area the feel of a small east coast town. From City Hall and the Performing Arts Center to the Village, there are plenty of activities available in addition to the lake.

  • The Big Bear Village—shopping and restaurants
  • Three marinas and many private docks
  • Public lake access at many points (see list under ‘things to do’)
  • Lake front and lake view properties
  • Easy access/input to local government

Natural Surroundings

With lakefront all along the north side of this area, the lake plays a large part in the natural surroundings here. This section of the lake has Metcalf Bay and Gilner Point. Bird watching at the lake shore would bring a lot of possibilities with great blue herons, sea gulls, white pelicans, Canada geese, coots, ducks of many varieties—mallards, wood ducks, grebes, teals, buffleheads, gadwalls and mergansers—as well as a possible bald eagle or osprey.

A few trails are accessible along the national forest boundary. The surrounding forest has lots of small wildlife, as well as deer, coyotes and black bears. In the spring and early summer, many native plants and wildflowers make their appearance along the south side and in open spaces within the area. It is especially nice to view the endangered checkerblooms and pebble plain habitat flowers that like this area.
